Esher U14 Tour to Barcelona

A week ago, Esher Rugby Club’s U14 squad set off on their end-of-season tour and what a journey it turned out to be. This year’s destination held special significance for me personally. I had the privilege of living and working in Barcelona for five years, and returning there this time as a coach was a dream come true.

Our match took place in the stunning town of Sitges, just south of Barcelona. A picturesque setting surrounded by mountains and Mediterranean beauty, the Sitges Rugby Club welcomed us with open arms. A huge thank you to Santiago, Rosalia, and Fede for their generosity, organisation and warm hospitality your support made the experience unforgettable.

Playing in temperatures and humidity far beyond what our boys are used to, the game was a true test of resilience and skill. Sitges RFC brought a physical, structured forward pack and the game was fiercely contested from the first whistle. Our boys showed courage, heart and teamwork in conditions they’d never experienced before.

One of the highlights for me came after the competitive game had finished. With the pressure off, we were able to mix the teams for a final 15 minutes. I had the chance to coach and instruct some of the Spanish players from the sideline. That moment bridging cultures through rugby was incredibly humbling and a memory I will always cherish.

On a personal note, it was especially meaningful to share this tour with my son, who is part of the Esher squad. To be able to show him parts of my life in Spain and for him to experience and embrace the amazing Spanish culture first-hand was something truly special. Watching him play in a place that shaped so much of who I am was an emotional and proud moment a memory we’ll both carry for a lifetime.

More than just a game, the tour created bonds that stretched far beyond the pitch. Our players built friendships with their Spanish counterparts sharing laughs, team huddles and post-match traditions. That’s the power of sport. That’s rugby at its best.

This wasn’t just a rugby match. It was a cultural exchange, a learning opportunity and a life experience for 22 young players. For me, it was a full-circle moment and I have dreams of being involved in Spanish rugby in a professional capacity at some point in my career.

To the players, parents, supporters, and Sitges RFC – thank you

Here’s to many more international memories ahead!
